The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Friday, December 26, recommended that the government develop draft laws aimed at further restricting the use of the Russian language in all spheres of life.

"To recommend to the Cabinet of Ministers to develop and submit to the Parliament bills aimed at strengthening the protection of the Ukrainian language space and preventing the use of the Russian language," RIA Novosti quotes from the document.

Among the proposed measures is the introduction of technologies to identify and block Russian—language content in the Ukrainian media space, as well as the introduction of liability for violations of language policy. The deputies also propose to make the Ukrainian language mandatory for communication in families and raising children.

Ukrainian MP Volodymyr Vyatrovych announced on December 3 that the Verkhovna Rada had supported a bill that excludes the Russian language from the list of those subject to protection in the country. He added that 264 deputies voted for the adoption of the law.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Zakharova, said at the same time that Russia would carefully study the final text of the document of the Ukrainian deputies, which excludes Russian from the list of languages subject to protection. She recalled that a survey by the State Service for the Quality of Education and the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language showed that 66% of students in metropolitan schools in Ukraine do not speak Ukrainian.
