The presidents of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), Alexander Ceferin, speak in veiled terms about the lack of authority to allow Russian teams to participate in international competitions. This was announced on December 26 by Maxim Mitrofanov, General Secretary of the Russian Football Union (RFU).

"Both presidents are veiled in saying that the powers of the football authorities are not enough to implement this decision. They are waiting for the position of the United States, first of all, in my opinion. In particular, based on where the main sponsors of these federations are located," he said in an interview with TASS.

He noted that consideration of this issue at the congresses of organizations in 2026 is possible, but it will depend on their executive committees. The RFU will take part in the UEFA and FIFA congresses if Russian representatives are given visas, he added.

Russian teams have been banned from participating in international tournaments since February 2022, Sport-Express adds.

Earlier, on December 12, it became known that the RFU will receive compensation in the amount of € 3.8 million from UEFA for the non-participation of the Russian team in European competitions. It was noted that the amount is influenced by the country's position in the UEFA ranking and the income of the club that earned the most in the proportions of 70% and 30%, respectively.
