Russians named preferred and unwanted gifts for the New Year
Certificates, clothing, and household goods are the most popular categories of goods among Russians as gifts for the New Year. ORMATEK experts conducted a study and found out what gifts Russians had prepared for their loved ones, what budget they had allocated for gifts, and what they would not like to find under the Christmas tree. The survey data was reviewed by Izvestia on December 31.
The majority of the study participants — 55% — allocated between 5,000 and 15,000 rubles for gifts. Another 17% planned to spend 15-40 thousand rubles, and 11% were limited to 3-5 thousand rubles. Only 5% of respondents are willing to take on expenses above 40 thousand rubles per year, and 3% of them plan a budget of more than 100 thousand rubles. At the same time, 3% preferred to make gifts with their own hands, and 2% do not plan to buy presents at all.
The most popular categories were gift certificates, which were chosen by 51% of the participants. 44% of respondents are ready to give money, and 40% are ready to give household goods. 38% of Russians focus on clothes, shoes and accessories, while travel remains a rare option — only 5% are willing to spend on them.
"The interest in gifts for sleep is natural: in conditions of constant stress, people are more conscious about organizing quality rest. Comfortable pillows and mattresses provide a complete rest for a person, therefore they are perceived as an investment in health, and such categories of goods are increasingly being chosen as a gift to loved ones," ORMATEK experts noted.
When choosing gifts, 38% of respondents were guided by the wishes of their loved ones, 25% admitted that the main factor was the price, and 19% relied on universal goods. Another 10% bought gifts according to their taste, and 8% chose practical and useful gifts.
However, not all gifts are equally desirable. More than half of the respondents, 55%, would not like to receive underwear, considering it too personal, 15% opposed fur products for ethical reasons, and 14% called expensive status gadgets an unjustified waste. 10% of respondents would not be happy with money, and 5% would not be happy with foreign trips. Another gift option was chosen by 1% of the respondents.
At the same time, 43% of Russians admitted that they get more pleasure from giving than from receiving gifts. 35% of respondents — on the contrary. 20% of the respondents are ready to give a gift equivalent to the one they receive themselves. 2% do not go to visit, so as not to give anything.
New Year's gifts are increasingly perceived as a show of care rather than a way to make an impression. Practical things for home, sleep and health are becoming a priority, as they affect the quality of life and human health.
On December 18, representatives of the ORO marketing research agency pointed to an increase in Russians' spending on New Year's Eve in 2025. According to their research, the largest spending on New Year's Eve is observed among young people and residents of the Central region. Young people spend more on holidays than older generations — on average about 24 thousand rubles.
