The Supreme Court upheld the verdict of the "Volga maniac" Radik Tagirov, convicted of murdering 31 pensioners. This was reported on December 25 by a correspondent of Izvestia.

"The verdict <...> should remain unchanged, and his cassation appeal should be dismissed," the judge ruled.

The ruling may be appealed to the Presidium of the Supreme Court.

The man was arrested in December 2020. On December 2, the suspect was charged under clauses "a" and "h" of Part 2 of Article 105, Part 3 of Article 30, Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Murder of two or more persons for mercenary motives, attempted murder"). During the interrogation, he admitted his guilt in committing crimes. Tagirov said that he introduced himself as an employee of the housing and communal services or social services and then found himself in the apartments of elderly women, then killed them and stole their savings.

According to the investigation, the accused committed crimes from March 2011 to October 2012 in different cities of Russia. Investigators also found out that Tagirov had two previous convictions for possession of weapons and theft.

In December last year, the Fourth Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction in Nizhny Novgorod upheld Tagirov's life sentence. On October 27, Tagirov appealed his life sentence to the Supreme Court.
