Trump-backed politician Asfura won the Honduran presidential election
Nasri Asfura, a candidate from the National Party of Honduras, who was supported by US President Donald Trump, won the presidential election in the country. This was reported on December 25 by the Reuters news agency.
Chairman of the National Electoral Council (NIS) Ana Paola Hall declared Asfura the elected President of the country for the term from January 27, 2026 to January 27, 2030.
"The Honduran electoral authority stated that Asfura won 40.3% of the vote, ahead of the candidate from the centrist-right Liberal Party, Salvador Nasralla, who scored 39.5%," the article says.
According to the newspaper, the election results were delayed due to technical failures and manual recount of 15% of the protocols. Prior to that, Trump called Asfura a "true friend of freedom" in Honduras and actively supported him during the campaign.
At the same time, the opposition and representatives of the ruling LIBRE party expressed dissatisfaction with the results, calling them a "coup", arguing that the US intervention played a key role in Asfura's victory.
On December 11, it was reported that the Congress of Honduras refused to recognize the results of the presidential election. The deputies also criticized the alleged US interference in the election process, describing such actions as a "threat to the people of Honduras."
On December 2, Trump threatened Honduras with a "hellish reckoning" due to the situation related to the completion of the counting of votes in the presidential election. He pointed out that on November 30, the majority of residents voted in the presidential election, but the National Election Commission, which is responsible for counting votes, suddenly stopped processing them. Trump added that this was done with only 47% of the votes counted.
