Dedicated to the 135th anniversary of Konstantin Melnikov's birth at the Shchusev State Scientific Research Museum of Architecture with the support of DOM.The Russian Federation has opened an exhibition of paintings by the famous architect "Architect without architecture. Painting by Konstantin Melnikov". This was reported by the press service of DOM.RF.

The project focuses on 17 paintings created by Melnikov in the 1930s and 50s in his studio house in Krivoarbatsky Lane. These works, which have long remained in the shadow of its architectural heritage, underwent restoration from 2022 to 2025.

"Supporting this exhibition is a natural step for us within the framework of the DOM.RF mission. The project allows us to trace the creative evolution of the master during a difficult historical period when the possibilities for architectural practice were extremely limited. His paintings, which are less well—known to the general public, inspire the younger generation of specialists working with cities to create modern projects with deep meaning," said the Director of Urban Environment Development at DOM.Russian Federation Anton Finogenov.

Konstantin Melnikov received a classical art education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where Konstantin Korovin was among his teachers. Like his mentor, Melnikov remained faithful to the impressionistic style of painting until the end of his life.

"This project is completely atypical for a museum. In the deserted semi-darkness of the manor's state halls, with classical desudeports and columns, a painting by the master of the avant-garde era suddenly appears. This is not an exhibition, this is an artistic reflection. About how such a bold experimenter and visionary as Melnikov remained an absolute conservative in painting," commented Ksenia Smirnova, Deputy Director of the Shchusev Museum of Architecture for Educational Activities.
