The rating of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz fell against the background of the politician's foreign policy failures. This was reported by the Berliner Zeitung (BZ) newspaper on December 22.

"This collapse did not come out of nowhere. During the election campaign, Merz emphasized clarity, economic competence and ensuring order," the article says.

According to the newspaper, December was a blow for Merz, due to the failure to confiscate Russian assets, internal party defeats and a new postponement of the agreement on MERCOSUR ("Mercosur", the South American Common Market). In addition, German citizens are dissatisfied with Merz's "narrow mindset" and his failures in foreign policy.

Earlier, on December 21, Der Spiegel magazine reported that about 60% of Germans critically assessed the work of the German government and Merz. It was noted that only 27% of the surveyed citizens expect improvement in Germany. Also, only 35% of respondents want to see Merz as chancellor in the future.

Before that, on December 7, the Bild newspaper reported that Merz and his government were losing the support of the German population at a record pace. 70% of respondents are dissatisfied with the work of the ruling coalition, the results of the study showed. Only 21% of the respondents are satisfied with the government's activities.
