The psychologist explained the importance of emotional immunity
In an era of continuous change and information overload, emotional immunity, the ability of the psyche to adapt to stress and maintain internal stability, becomes a fundamental resource for maintaining stability and success. Psychologist Mariana Dinapoli told Izvestia about this on December 25.
"It is important not to confuse emotional immunity with emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the foundation: the ability to recognize and manage emotions. Emotional immunity is its continuation and result: resistance to emotional overloads, the ability to maintain efficiency and clarity of thinking in the face of constant changes," she said.
The specialist emphasized that emotional immunity is not selfishness, but an investment in one's own stability, the ability to set boundaries, protect one's time and energy, trust oneself and not try to control everything around. This is a complex ability of the psyche to minimize the destructive effects of negative emotions and come out of trials stronger. Many people today feel exhausted: the slightest event unsettles them, causing irritability, anxiety or apathy, which is a signal of the thinning of the internal protective shield.
Social media, which dictate the rule of three seconds to capture attention and turn self-presentation into a necessity, increases this burden. The world has become faster and more unpredictable, which increases human vulnerability, the expert noted. According to her, weak emotional immunity is like a computer that is constantly exposed to virus attacks: all resources are spent not on development, but on troubleshooting. This manifests itself in disruptions to loved ones, procrastination, fear of judgment, and the feeling that you are constantly "falling short," which ultimately negatively affects all key areas of life — work, family, health, and self-fulfillment.
However, unlike innate features, emotional immunity is a skill that can be developed through a conscious attitude towards oneself, one's boundaries and ways of recovery. It is an internal shield that helps not to break down under pressure, but to adapt to new realities, preserving the quality of life and the ability to achieve your goals.
"Imagine that you have a powerful computer, but it is constantly being attacked by viruses. All resources are spent not on development, but on troubleshooting. It's the same with us: weak emotional immunity is a constant drain of energy. It manifests itself in breakdowns on loved ones and colleagues, procrastination, fear of judgment, unwillingness to take on new things, and the feeling that you are constantly "falling short." As a result, all key areas of life are under attack: work, family, health, money, self—realization," Dinapoli said.
Psychologist Ekaterina Yemelyanova told Izvestia on December 4 that modern people are increasingly faced with a condition where they do not have the strength and cannot force themselves to work. According to her, in this case, laziness can be a way to resolve an internal dispute: one part of the personality longs for realization and recognition, the other is afraid not to endure potential failure.
