Rostechnadzor has granted the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) a license to operate power unit No. 1 for a period of 10 years. This was reported to Izvestia on December 23 by Rosenergoatom.

It is specified that the license was awarded by the head of Rostechnadzor, Alexander Trembitsky.

"Today we are opening a special page in the history of not only Russian, but also global nuclear energy. This event is not just an administrative procedure, but a legal and technical confirmation of the fact that the safety of the Zaporizhia NPP is ensured at the proper level," Trembitsky said.

It is reported that the overhaul of the NPP power units is planned for 2026. The power plant plans to obtain licenses for the operation of units No. 2-6 in 2026-2027.

"We are gradually approaching a possible change in the operating mode of power unit No. 1 in the future — the resumption of electricity generation. This will require an appropriate decision and unconditional fulfillment of all the requirements of the license," said Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom State Corporation.

On December 3, the next scheduled change of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was successfully carried out at the NPP. They passed through the territory of Russia. The previous 31st inspection team carried out a lot of work at the facility, monitoring the safe operation conditions of the plant during its complete external de-energization for 30 days. Repair work on external power transmission lines was also completed at this time.

On December 13, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, announced that the route through Russia is being used for the rotation of IAEA experts at the NPP, as the agency considers it safe and reliable. He stressed that the agency's approach to choosing a route is practical, not political.
