The German authorities reacted cautiously to French President Emmanuel Macron's plans to hold a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported on December 22 by the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung.
"Berlin's reaction to Macron's phone plans was narrow-minded. The considerations were "taken into consideration," said Deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer, "the material says.
According to the newspaper, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz does not consider this decision a "significant contribution" to achieving peace and strengthening European security.
Earlier, on December 21, the BMFTV TV channel reported that the French side takes note of the Kremlin's openness to negotiations with Macron. It also followed from the statement of the Elysee Palace that France would decide in the coming days on the best way forward on this issue.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on the same day that Putin had expressed his willingness to hold a dialogue with the French leader. He added that if the presidents have the political will to negotiate, this can "only be positively assessed."
Macron said on December 19 that representatives of the European Union and Ukraine needed to talk to the Russian leader. He stressed the importance for Europeans not to entrust this dialogue exclusively to intermediaries.
