Sweden has announced its intention to ban marriage between close relatives
The Swedish government has submitted a bill that provides for a ban on marriages between cousins, as well as the non-recognition of such marriages concluded outside the kingdom. This is stated in a press release from the government office.
The aim of the initiative is to combat harassment related to the concept of honor, as well as other forms of pressure and coercion that may arise during marriage. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer stressed that violence and oppression related to the concept of honor are unacceptable in Swedish society, and these principles should be reflected in legislation.
"The ban on marriages between cousins is an important measure to ensure everyone's right to manage their own lives," he said.
In addition, the bill provides for a ban on marriages between other close relatives, including stepbrothers and adopted siblings. The new law is expected to enter into force on July 1, 2026.
