- Zeit reported on Pistorius' denial of the possibility of a conflict between Russia and NATO
The Minister of Defense of the Federal Republic of Germany, Boris Pistorius, rejected the possibility of an allegedly realistic "attack" by Russia on NATO countries, which some Western European politicians and officials point to. This was reported by the Zeit newspaper on December 22.
"I don't believe in such a scenario," Pistorius said in an interview with the newspaper.
According to the minister, the Russian leadership is starting a conflict with NATO, but he noted that Moscow may question the unity of the alliance and seek to force the American side to retreat from the European continent.
On December 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that Russia was not planning any aggressive actions against NATO and EU countries and was ready to record such guarantees in writing. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, also said that Russia was not going to attack NATO countries and noted that Western politicians were using the "minimal Russian threat" to distract attention from internal problems, but "smart people understand perfectly well that this is fake."
Earlier, on December 19, it was reported that to date, the armed forces of NATO member countries are not sufficiently adapted for prolonged combat operations. Mike Utley, Vice Admiral of the Royal Navy of Great Britain, who heads the alliance's Joint Maritime Command, said that over the past 10 months, NATO has demonstrated a lack of desired stability in this matter.
