On December 22, the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, reminded the United States that only residents of Greenland and Denmark can determine the island's status.

"We continue to express our solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Any changes to her status can only be decided by Greenlanders and Danes," Kallas wrote on her page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

The diplomat stressed that she expects all partners of the European Union (EU) to respect Greenland's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On December 21, US President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to the post of US special Envoy to Greenland. Later, on December 22, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen summoned the American ambassador in Copenhagen for an explanation after Landry's appointment as special envoy for Greenland and his statements about his intention to annex the island to the United States.

In December last year, Trump said that for the United States, ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Prior to that, he expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was refused. In 2025, the American leader was also told that the island was not for sale and would not be, but Denmark could cooperate more with the United States.
