- A surge in fraud with "snow-covered Christmas trees" has been revealed in the Russian Federation
The artificial intelligence of Yandex Browser has detected a surge in New Year's Eve schemes to deceive customers on the Internet. Since the beginning of December, the company's algorithms have identified a wave of phishing sites through which fraudsters offer to buy "snow-covered" or "special" Christmas trees with delivery. This was reported to Izvestia on December 23 in the Yandex press service.
"Attackers create fake one-page websites with attractive images of fir trees. The user is asked to place an order by specifying the name and phone number. Shortly after that, the user is contacted by a "manager" who sends a link to pay for the order. After receiving the money, the "seller" disappears, and the goods are not delivered," the message says.
It is noted that such sites are often indistinguishable from the real ones. Alexander Lunev, head of cybersecurity training at Yandex, advises paying attention to strange addresses, scant information about the company, lack of legal data and reviews of stores in search results. So, it is important not to follow payment links from chat rooms and pay for orders only on the site itself.
Konstantin Larin, head of the Bastion cyber intelligence department, said on December 18 that there was an increase in fraud related to fake delivery services in Russia. He noted that the attack has now become more complicated.: First, the "support operator" calls, collects the data, and then uses it to obtain bank card details. All actions are aimed at ensuring that the interlocutor voluntarily dictates the necessary information.
