Three-time Olympic figure skating champion and State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina appreciated the performances of the winners of the Russian Figure Skating Championships, Adelia Petrosyan and Peter Gumennik. The Honored Master of Sports of the USSR noted in an interview with the Sport24 portal on December 22 that she was very worried about the young athletes before the important tournament.

Rodnina explained that Gumennik and Petrosyan had to reach their peak form back in September in order to compete at the Olympic qualification tournament. This situation is very difficult for both athletes and coaches, the three—time Olympic champion noted.

"Peter had some flaws, but it's clear that everything is under control. Physically, it is enough for both programs. It seemed that Adelia's problems, on the contrary, were rather psychological," Rodnina drew attention.

On December 19, figure skater Petrosyan took first place after the short program at the Russian Figure Skating Championships, which took place in St. Petersburg. The athlete received 86.52 points. In her program, she performed a triple axel. On December 21, Humennik became the winner of the competition, following the results of the short and free programs, the athlete scored 304.95 points. Evgeny Semenenko took the second place, Mark Kondratyuk became the third.

On December 1, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Petrosyan and Humennik had accepted an invitation to participate in the 2026 Olympic Games in a neutral status.
