In Russia, January 13 is the national holiday of the Generous Evening, or the Generous. It is associated with Old New Year's Eve and has deep roots in pre-Christian paganism. In 2026, the date falls on a Tuesday. This day is dedicated to generosity, good deeds, fortune-telling and folk festivals. Read about the history of the holiday, traditions, as well as signs and prohibitions in the Izvestia article.

Generous evening, or the Generous One — the history of the January 13 holiday

Initially, the holiday was celebrated on the night of December 31 to January 1, however, with the transition to the Gregorian calendar, the date has shifted — now a Generous evening is celebrated on the night of January 13-14 along with the old New Year.

In pre-Christian times, the day was associated with deities, in particular with the mother of all gods Lada and her daughter Milanka. According to legend, Milanka was abducted by an evil serpent, but the hero Bezpalchik-Vasilchik defeated the monster, saved the girl and married her. Lavish feasts and performances were held in honor of this event. People believed that the gods and spirits of the dead celebrated the holiday with them.

After the adoption of Christianity, the customs of the holiday mixed with church traditions, which gave the celebration a new meaning — the Day of Memory of Melania the Roman, who lived in the IV–V centuries. From that time on, the holiday became known as Melanka.

The traditions of the Generous Evening, or the Generous

On this day, large feasts with the best treats were held in Russia. A traditional dish, a generous kutia, was also prepared for the holiday. Milk, cream, wheat groats, nuts, poppy seeds and honey were added to it, which symbolized the attraction of wealth and health to the house.

Folk festivals and fortune-telling rituals were also held on this day, especially popular among young people. They were guessing at the intended and the date of the future wedding. Young people often staged theatrical performances with costumes and masks, which was also part of the tradition of a Lavish Evening.

In addition, on a Generous evening, they performed bounties — special short songs. Groups of young people went door to door, knocked on the gates, and after greeting the hosts, they began to sing and ask for treats.

What not to do on a Lavish Evening, or a Generous

A number of prohibitions are imposed on a Lavish evening, violating which could cause trouble. For example, it was not allowed to quarrel, because it promised conflicts and troubles for the whole year.

Other bans for January 13:

— talking before washing leads to empty conversations during the day;

— counting small change, giving or borrowing leads to material losses;

— to refuse generous gifts to those who sing, or not to treat them, leads to a loss of luck and well—being.

Signs of the national holiday Generous evening, or Generous

The signs associated with a Lavish Evening are very diverse and closely related to abundance on the table and good luck in the future. Dumplings with surprises were also prepared for the celebration, the unusual fillings of which symbolized an event. For example, beans are for children, a button is for a new thing, sugar is for a good life, a penny is for money.
