- The court handed down a verdict in absentia to the defendants in the case of the attack on the Russian Embassy in Ukraine
The Moscow City Court has sentenced in absentia the defendants in the case of the attack on the Russian Embassy in Ukraine. Vladimir Nazarenko was sentenced to 12 years in prison, and Alexey Bakai was sentenced to 9 years in prison. The relevant information was published on December 22 on the official website of the Prosecutor General's Office (GP) of the Russian Federation.
"On the night of June 14-15, 2014, Nazarenko, Bakai, Nikolai Rudkovsky and others <...> took actions aimed at complicating international and severing diplomatic relations between Russia and Ukraine, as well as other states," the ministry said in a statement.
It is noted that they, armed with axes, molotov cocktails and other objects, attacked the Russian diplomatic mission in Kiev and the embassy's cars, as a result of which the buildings and cars of diplomats were damaged and the flag of the Russian Federation was destroyed. Later, in 2016, these individuals prevented Russians from entering the embassy building to vote in the State Duma elections.
According to the GP, the men were found guilty under two articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.: 360 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("An attack on office premises and vehicles of persons enjoying international protection committed in order to complicate international relations"). Nazarenko was also convicted under clauses "a" and "b" of Part 2 of Article 141 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Obstruction of the exercise of electoral rights or the work of election commissions, combined with the use of violence and the threat of its use, committed by a group of persons by prior agreement").
In addition, Nazarenko and Bakai were put on the international wanted list.
Earlier, on October 19, the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia completed an investigation into the case of a Ukrainian citizen Irina Zemlyana, who doused the Russian Ambassador to Poland with red paint. In her case, a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen in absentia.
