Crosby became the top scorer in the history of Pittsburgh
Canadian Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby has become the top scorer in the club's history, surpassing hockey player Mario Lemieux in the number of points scored in the regular championships of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The team's record holder now has 1,724 points. Crosby won this mark in a home match against Montreal, scoring a goal and an assist.
The 38-year-old Pittsburgh captain reached a historic milestone in his 1,387th league game. He now has 645 goals and 1,078 assists. Lemieux, whose record was broken, scored 1,723 points (690 goals and 1,033 assists) in 915 games with the team.
Thanks to this achievement, Crosby rose to eighth place in the list of the best scorers in NHL history. His next target may be the seventh position, which is occupied by Steve Yzerman with 1,755 points. Wayne Gretzky remains the league's all-time record holder with 2,857 points.
Crosby has been playing for Pittsburgh since 2005, when he was selected at number one in the draft. During this time, he won the Stanley Cup three times, was twice recognized as the most valuable player of the regular season and was included in the list of the 100 best NHL hockey players in 100 years.
Russian forward Artemiy Panarin beat two-time Stanley Cup winner Pavel Datsyuk on December 21, becoming the 11th Russian hockey player in the number of goals scored in the history of the NHL regular season. In the match with Philadelphia, which ended on Saturday, December 20, with a score of 5:4 in shootouts, Panarin scored two goals.
