About 525,000 Cambodians have fled their homes due to the conflict on the border with Thailand. This was reported on December 22 by the Khmer Times newspaper, citing data from the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs.
"The number of civilians forced to leave their homes and move to safer areas has increased...> it has grown to 525,231 people," the publication says.
It is specified that as a result of the acts of aggression committed on December 7, 19 civilians were killed and 79 people were injured. In addition, two cell towers, 103 private homes, five schools, three hotels and 11 government office buildings were damaged due to the strikes.
On December 8, the Cambodian military opened fire on the Thai Anupong base. In response, the Thai army called on residents of the border areas to evacuate to shelters due to the threat of escalation of the conflict. The next day, fighting between Thailand and Cambodia unfolded along the entire joint border, affecting five regions and hundreds of citizens on both sides.
On December 12, US President Donald Trump announced that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a cease-fire and respect for an earlier peace agreement.
