The media reported on Merz's isolation due to his position on Russian assets

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz found himself isolated among other leaders of the European Union (EU) because of his position on frozen Russian assets. This was reported on December 19 by the Berliner Zeitung newspaper.

"The facts spoke against Merz, as well as against [European Commission President] Ursula von der Leyen, who, however, had already begun to distance herself from Merz when it became clear that the chancellor was isolated in Europe," the publication says.
