- The former Prime Minister of Pakistan and his wife were sentenced to another 17 years in prison.
A Pakistani court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to another 17 years in prison in a corruption case involving gift purchases. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on December 20.
According to the newspaper, the new charges relate to luxury watches given to Khan by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during official visits, which, according to prosecutors, Khan and his wife then purchased from the state at a significantly reduced price in violation of gift rules.
"The court announced the verdict without listening to the defense, and sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison with heavy fines," said the family's lawyer, Rana Mudassar Umer.
Another lawyer for the family, Salman Safdar, said Khan had instructed his legal team to appeal the decision to the Islamabad High Court. It is noted that the sentence worsens the situation of Khana, who has already been in prison since 2023 and is serving a 14-year sentence in a land bribery case. The new prison term will take effect immediately after the expiration of the previous term.
In 2024, Imran Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison in a corruption case involving the sale of valuables stored in the Toshahan state Treasury. The convict was also banned from holding any public office for 10 years and fined 787 million rupees (about $2.8 million).
The "Toshahana case" is related to the sale of valuables from Toshahana without paying taxes. In March 2023, charges of selling state property worth more than $630,000, money laundering and dozens of other crimes were brought against the ex-minister, 17 of his assistants and several dozen others.
