The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on December 19 that it was taking extreme precautions to protect the victims of financier Jeffrey Epstein, accused of trafficking minors and sexual exploitation by "over-editing" photographs. This follows from the DOJ's statement to the federal court.

"In connection with the preparation and public disclosure of materials required by Law (hereinafter referred to as the Materials of the Transparency Act), the department applies a victim—oriented approach. <...> the process of verification and excessive editing, and especially the emphasis on the interests of protecting the privacy of victims, may lead to the editing of materials," the document says..

It is specified that the Ministry of Justice is also engaged in identifying victims who would like to have their personal data removed from the materials. The statement also emphasizes that in the process of studying the files, some errors and inconsistencies in editing have already been discovered.

On December 20, Izvestia reviewed the published materials on the Epstein case. Among them, a photo of the 42nd American President Bill Clinton in a Jacuzzi was discovered. In one of the shots, the former head of the White House lies in the water, while wringing his hands behind his head. Next to him is a man whose face is hidden. In another photo, Clinton is swimming in a Greek-style pool surrounded by two women.

The US Department of Justice began publishing Epstein's files on the same day after US President Donald Trump signed a bill on November 19 to make them public. On December 20, Maria Zakharova, an official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, joked about a queue of people who wanted to get acquainted with documents declassified on the website of the US Department of Justice.
