Putin's phrase "European piggybacks" may become a dictionary
Russian President Vladimir Putin's phrase "European piggies" may be included in the dictionary of 2025 as an aphorism. This was announced on December 19 by Associate Professor of the Department of Slavic Studies, General Linguistics and Culture of Communication at the State University of Enlightenment, Doctor of Philology and Professor Tatiana Fadeeva.
"The phrase "European piggies" may well be included in the dictionary of 2025 as an aphoristic statement," she said in an interview with TASS.
Fadeeva noted that the lexeme "piglets", which usually refers to piglets between the ages of four and 10 months, acquires a negative connotation in this context, reflecting the opponent's political inconsistency. The prefix "under" in Russian often conveys the meaning of "being below something", which in this case emphasizes the "lack of independence" and "immaturity" of the subjects to which the phrase refers.
The philologist stressed that in combination with the adjective "European", this lexeme acquires a figurative meaning, denoting countries that "do not have sovereignty and political subjectivity." The context of the phrase's use, she says, also reinforces its negative connotation, especially when combined with the verb "turned on," which emphasizes "lack of independence" and "late involvement" in the process.
On December 17, Putin announced that many Western countries were counting on a quick victory in the clash with Russia. According to him, the "European backers" immediately joined the work of the former US administration, hoping to take advantage of the situation and regain lost opportunities. Putin stressed that the EU's actions can be seen as an attempt to "take revenge" for previous years. Later, the Russian president said that the word "piggybacks" appeared to him after communicating with a military audience.
