The European Commission (EC) may cancel the visa-free regime with Georgia if Tbilisi ignores the recommendations of the European Union (EU). This follows from the eighth EC report published on December 19 as part of the mechanism for suspending the visa-free regime.

It is noted that at the first stage, the visa-free regime will be suspended for holders of diplomatic, official and official passports issued by the Georgian authorities, as they bear the main responsibility for non-compliance with the recommendations.

"At the second stage, the suspension of the visa-free regime may be extended to the entire population if the Georgian authorities do not resolve the identified problems. In the end, Georgia may completely lose the status of a visa—free country," RIA Novosti reports.

According to the EC, Georgia has adopted a number of legislative acts that allegedly contradict European obligations — the law on transparency of foreign influence, the law on family values and protection of minors, as well as the law on registration of foreign agents.

In November, it was reported that the European Commission intends to launch a new visa mechanism, which will be used as an instrument of pressure on Georgia in order to return the country to the path of European integration. At the same time, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that Georgia has recently been "moving away from the EU."
