To reduce the risks of escalating political crises, leading political actors must respect international and humanitarian law. This was stated to Izvestia on December 19 by political analyst Ivan Mezyuho.

"Respect for sovereignty and international law, including humanitarian law, on the part of the world's leading political actors would reduce, if not the risks of conflict, then the consequences of existing crisis phenomena. Both militarily and economically and politically," he explained.

Mezyuho stated that Western-oriented unions are experiencing internal crises and react very poorly to changes in international politics and the new geopolitical reality.

"First of all, this is evident within the framework of NATO and the European Union. The unity of the so—called Western bloc of states is no longer obvious due to the change in US foreign policy towards its European partners, and indeed the whole world," the political scientist said.

He also noted the obvious crisis within the UN observed in recent years.

"Secretary General Antonio Guterres himself acknowledged this when he spoke about the lack of interest in the organization's documents," Meziuho summed up.

The EU promised Kiev joint security guarantees with the United States and announced new sanctions against Russia.
