The State Duma appreciated Europe's decision on frozen assets
European politicians were not ready to take responsibility for the theft of Russian assets and the consequences of such a step. This was announced on Friday, December 19, by State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova.
"Not every politician was ready to take on such a decision. After all, the people are behind the politicians, and one way or another, everyone understands that we are talking about theft. Dragging your people into an extremely dubious adventure that can definitely be challenged by the court is a dubious idea," she said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
According to the parliamentarian, despite the loud statements of some particularly aggressive European leaders, there was initially no unity in the European Parliament (EP) on the issue of the seizure of frozen assets of Russia.
"Of course, the expectations were different, but everyone understood that there were no legal grounds for the seizure of Russian assets. To take such a step would mean setting a very dangerous precedent," Zhurova said, admitting that the corruption scandal in Ukraine had played a role.
The head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, announced on the same day that the participants of the EU summit had decided to finance Ukraine for €90 billion in 2026-2027, IA Regnum reports. According to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the loan is provided at zero percent, RT reports. In turn, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban noted that the interest-free loan of €90 billion for Ukraine is wasted money.
