- The media learned about Airbus' plans to use drones for the coast guard of EU countries
Airbus has received a $35 million contract from the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) to provide coastline security services with Flexrotor drones. This was reported on December 19 by the military magazine The Defense Blog.
"The contract will provide support for maritime surveillance missions for the Coast Guard. This agreement marks the first operational use of the Flexrotor system in Europe," Airbus said in a press release.
Flexrotor is a vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicle designed for reconnaissance and surveillance missions.
It is noted that Airbus will provide a full range of drone management services. Flexrotor will also provide video recordings and infrared images, as well as radar intelligence data, which will be transmitted to the EMC data processing center in real time.
The contract provides for the provision of coast guard services for two years, with the possibility of further extension for another two years. Airbus clarified that the drones will be put on duty in 2026.
On December 1, the Reuters news agency reported that Airbus had identified a problem in the production process concerning the fuselage panels of several dozen A320 aircraft. This defect led to a delay in deliveries, but, according to the interlocutors of the publication, the problem did not affect the operation of the aircraft already in use.
