Fico announced Slovakia's refusal to participate in granting a loan to Ukraine
Slovakia does not intend to participate in providing a loan to Ukraine. This was announced on December 19 by the country's Prime Minister Robert Fico.
"Slovakia will not be part of any loan for Ukraine," he said at a press conference, the video of which was posted on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company that is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).
According to Fico, granting the loan will not lead to the strengthening of Ukraine, but on the contrary, it will lead to the continued loss of life.
"I do not believe that yesterday's decision <...> would lead to the strengthening of Ukraine, it only leads to senseless death," he added.
Along with this, Fico noted that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky had not expressed much interest in ending the conflict as soon as possible.
The leaders of the European Union (EU) failed to reach an agreement on the expropriation of frozen Russian assets during the summit of the heads of state of the union. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stressed that the refusal to confiscate frozen Russian assets is a victory for international law.
At the end of the EU summit, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia refused to participate in the granting of an interest-free loan to Kiev in the amount of €90 billion. It was clarified that the funds were allocated to Ukraine for 2026-2027 at the expense of the budget of the Union. This decision was firmly confirmed by 25 representatives of the EU member States.
