At a meeting on December 19, the Federation Council approved a law providing for an increase in the criminal penalty for desertion of former prisoners to 20 years. This was reported on December 19 by RIA Novosti.
According to the law, a former prisoner is criminalized for desertion, which was committed at the time of his temporary release (suspension of criminal proceedings) for the purpose of military service. The maximum penalty is 10 to 20 years in prison.
Those released from criminal punishment face from two to six years for unauthorized abandonment of a military unit for a period of two to 10 days. While, for leaving a part from 10 days to a month, a former prisoner can face from three to eight years.
On September 15, the Government Commission on Legislative Activity approved an initiative to introduce stricter liability measures for former prisoners who signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry and violated its terms. The changes relate to individuals who were released from punishment after signing a contract with the Ministry of Defense. At the moment, the maximum sentence for this crime for all military personnel is five years in prison.
