- The head of the Ministry of Defense of Belarus noted the preparation of the Oreshnik for combat duty
The Oreshnik missile system is preparing to go on combat duty in Belarus. This was announced to journalists on December 19 by the Minister of Defense of the Republic Viktor Khrenin.
"Yesterday, you all heard that the Oreshnik missile system arrived, is stationed on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, and is preparing to go on combat duty. As soon as this happens, we will definitely invite you and show you," RIA Novosti quoted Khrenin as saying.
He also noted that there are no plans to increase the grouping of troops of Russia and Belarus. In addition, according to the minister, Poland has deployed the Patriot air defense system to intimidate its population. Khrenin added that Minsk is calm about the idea of deploying nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
The day before, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced that the Russian Oreshnik missile system had entered service in Belarus. He stressed that the first positions have already been equipped for the complex, and from that moment on he will be on combat duty.
Prior to that, on November 12, Alexey Polishchuk, head of the second CIS department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, noted that the Russian nuclear shield reliably protects Belarus, and the updated legal framework allows deploying all the latest types of weapons on the territory of the republic. Answering a question about possible supplies of the Burevestnik cruise missile, the diplomat reported that there were no such requests, noting that if they were received, the requests would be carefully studied by military specialists, taking into account the tactical and technical characteristics of the product.
