- Britain appoints Permanent Representative to the United Nations Turner as new Ambassador to the United States
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed Christian Turner, the country's permanent representative to the United Nations, as the new British ambassador to the United States. This was announced on December 18 by the Sky News channel.
"I am pleased to announce that Christian Turner has been appointed British Ambassador to the United States of America. The United Kingdom and the United States have a special relationship, and Christian's extensive experience as an outstanding diplomat will help strengthen these unique ties and ensure their continued prosperity," Starmer said.
Christian Turner served as Political Director of the British Foreign Office from 2023 to early 2025, after which he was appointed permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, but did not take up his duties there.
As The Guardian newspaper reported, Starmer also considered the candidacy of the country's current ambassador to Russia, Nigel Casey, for the post of ambassador to Washington. The publication noted that whoever is appointed will have to take up the post at a critical moment in US-British relations, which are under strain due to disagreements over Ukraine and the aggressive strategy of the White House.
In September, Starmer fired British Ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson over his ties to notorious financier Jeffrey Epstein. According to British Foreign Minister Stephen Doughty, the emails showed that the depth and extent of the ambassador's relationship with Epstein are significantly different from those that were known at the time of his appointment.
