- The political scientist called the consequences of the EU's inability to provide a loan to Ukraine
Ukraine's economy has been surviving in recent years solely due to unprecedented large-scale assistance from Western countries, without which disaster awaits it. Political scientist Vladimir Shapovalov told about this on Thursday, December 18.
Earlier in the day, the Financial Times newspaper wrote that European officials were urgently looking for ways to secure further financing for Kiev in order to prevent the country's financial collapse. The issue of a "reparation loan" due to frozen Russian assets has split the European Union (EU) into two irreconcilable camps. 360.ru .
The political scientist noted that at the moment the EU member states do not have sufficient resources for financial assistance. According to him, the probability that Ukraine will have nothing to pay for budget items is quite high, even if the partners can somehow provide it with the necessary funds. The expert added that a number of European countries are ready to do this, primarily Germany.
"Sooner rather than later, a catastrophe awaits the Ukrainian economy, and we are simply talking about postponing this catastrophe," Shapovalov concluded in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, assured on December 18 that no one would leave the meeting until the issue of financing Ukraine for next year was resolved, according to the website. kp.ru . In addition, she expressed support for Belgium's demand for the allocation of risks associated with a possible "reparation loan."
On December 3, the European Commission approved a potential "reparation loan" for Ukraine, which implies the expropriation of sovereign Russian assets in Europe. Later, on December 12, the Politico newspaper reported that Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria, Malta opposed the EU proposal to transfer frozen assets of the Russian Federation to Ukraine, which amount to about €210 billion.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. In turn, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added on December 15 that the situation with frozen Russian assets shows that "theft is in the blood of Europeans."
