In France, 53-year-old anesthesiologist Frederic Peschier was sentenced to life in prison for poisoning 30 patients between the ages of four and 89, 12 of whom died. This was reported on December 18 by the newspaper Le Monde.

The court confirmed that Peshier deliberately caused cardiac arrest in his patients. According to investigators, the perpetrator intended to provoke emergency situations during operations in order to demonstrate his resuscitation skills and thereby humiliate colleagues.

It is noted that in all fatal cases, the autopsy showed an overdose of lidocaine. At the same time, Peschier himself did not admit his guilt in the case.

In May 2019, the French prosecutor's office charged Peschier with 17 new cases of poisoning patients. They also died during surgical operations performed under general anesthesia. The criminal case against Peschier, described by the state prosecutor as "unprecedented in the history of French law," was initiated in January 2017 after the death of a 36-year-old patient in a clinic in Besancon, eastern France.

The woman had no vascular diseases, but her heart suddenly stopped during the operation, which aroused suspicion and led to a review of other similar incidents in the city's hospitals. The cases of 30 patients who suffered cardiac arrest during operations at the clinics where Peshier worked have reached court.
