In Russia, January 12 is a professional holiday — the Day of the Prosecutor's Office employee. In 2026, the date of the celebration falls on Monday. All employees and veterans of the supervisory authority, which ensures the observance of law and order in the country, are involved in the holiday. Read about the history of the establishment of the department and the traditions of celebration in the Izvestia article.

Prosecutor's Office Day on January 12 — the history of creation

The Day of the Employee of the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation is celebrated in memory of the day when Emperor Peter I established the post of Prosecutor General. This event took place on January 12, 1722, and since then this date has become a symbol of the Prosecutor's Office of Russia. Peter the Great's decree established the duty of the Prosecutor General to oversee the executive, legislative and judicial authorities, as well as to combat riots, bribery and lawlessness.

The Prosecutor General in Russia has become an important government official. His role was often referred to as the "eye of the sovereign" because he controlled the activities of the authorities. The first Prosecutor General of Russia was Pavel Yaguzhinsky, who became a pillar in overseeing the rule of law in the country.

After the 1917 revolution, the prosecutor's office was temporarily liquidated, but in 1922 it was restored within the framework of the People's Commissariat of Justice, and in 1923 the Prosecutor's Office of the Supreme Court of the USSR was established. Later, the department went through several stages of reorganization, including in 1933, when the USSR Prosecutor's Office was established as an independent body overseeing all activities of government agencies.

After the collapse of the USSR, the prosecutor's office was restored to a new role, and in 1992 the law "On the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation" was adopted, which regulates the activities of the prosecutor's office in the country to this day. In 2007, the agency stopped investigating criminal cases due to the creation of the Investigative Committee of Russia, but continued to coordinate the activities of law enforcement agencies.

How to celebrate the Day of the Prosecutor's Office in Russia

On the Day of the Employee of the Prosecutor's Office of Russia, not only employees of the department are honored, but also veterans who have made a significant contribution to its development. Celebrations are held on this day, awards and honorary titles are awarded. The festive events also include press conferences and media publications that tell about the successes of the prosecutor's office, its control over the observance of citizens' rights and the fight against crime.

Special attention is paid to the memory of the deceased employees of the Prosecutor's Office, who gave their lives for the cause of law and justice.
