In St. Petersburg, scammers deceive schoolchildren through electronic diaries
Residents of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region have been warned about a new fraudulent scheme involving electronic school diaries. This was announced on December 18 by the press service of the Department for combating the illegal use of information and communication Technologies of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city and the region.
The attackers, posing as a school nurse, teacher, or other school staff, contact children and parents by phone.
Scammers convince their interlocutors that the electronic diary needs to be "urgently updated", "mandatory background checks", "medical check-ups" or additional registration for admission to classes.
"The purpose of such calls is to lure the SMS code from an account on Gosuslugi or a banking application, or to force the victim to click on a phishing link and enter the data themselves," the department's Telegram channel says.
Law enforcement officers strongly recommend that parents have a conversation with their children and warn them about such calls from scammers. All requests to follow the link or provide the code should be taken as an excuse to end the conversation.
Prior to that, on December 1, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation reported cases of cheating on students. It was noted that fraudsters pretend to be employees of educational organizations in order to deceive university students and demand codes from students under the pretext of not being allowed to take the exam.
