A skirmish broke out in the Bundestag over frozen Russian assets
A heated discussion broke out in the Bundestag when German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that he would seek the withdrawal of frozen Russian assets in favor of Ukraine. This statement provoked harsh criticism from the opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. This was reported on December 18 by RIA Novosti with reference to the broadcast of the meeting.
"Following the motto 'other people's money is easy to manage,' the federal Chancellor is illegally implementing his aggressive plan to seize Russian assets and transfer them to Ukraine," said Tino Fragalla, co—chairman of the AdG.
He also expressed concern about the increase in debts for German taxpayers related to the supply of weapons and military aid to Ukraine, as well as support for refugees. Abdullah stressed that his party would not support German participation in the deployment of multinational forces in Ukraine if it involved German troops.
In response to the criticism, Alexander Hoffmann, chairman of the land group of the CSU parliamentary faction, harshly confronted Abdullah, accusing him of protecting the interests of the United States and asking questions about possible ties with the American side. The debate between the deputies quickly turned into a shouting match, which required the intervention of the Vice Speaker of the Bundestag, Omid Nuripur, who tried to settle the conflict, the agency writes.
Rasmalla, in turn, stressed that the decision to use Russian assets for Ukraine could become a heavy financial burden for German taxpayers if it proves unsuccessful. According to him, the AfD "will never agree" with such a decision.
