Hackers who stole the data of more than 16.4 million people as a result of a large-scale cyberattack are blackmailing the French Ministry of the Interior, Le Figaro newspaper reported on December 17, citing a statement from the attackers.
"We have successfully compromised the French Interior Ministry. According to the French media, the authorities only admitted that we had gained access to the government's mail servers. Why don't you talk about the data of 16,444,373 people that we were able to access by hacking into your police registers?" the media quoted the attackers as saying.
According to Le Figaro, a user with the nickname Indra wrote that hackers had gained access to a variety of Interior Ministry documents, including lists of wanted persons, criminal records, victims and witnesses. According to him, the attack also affected the communication channels of Interpol, the tax service and the French pension fund.
In their message, the attackers call the attack revenge for the arrest of members of the hacker group Shiny Hunters and threaten to publish the data in the public domain if the government does not get in touch within a week.
