- The expert spoke about the split of the EU on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine
The European Union (EU) is divided on the issue of resolving the conflict in Ukraine, due to fears of a possible conflict with Russia and its catastrophic consequences. This was announced on December 17 by Turkish foreign policy expert Fevzi Aytac.
"Despite the existence of the EU as a single political entity, there is no longer any need to talk about consensus on issues related to Russia and Ukraine. European states are increasingly defending differing and sometimes opposing positions," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Aytaj added that the sharp criticism directed by US President Donald Trump against European leaders also points to deep contradictions in the EU.
Earlier, on December 16, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow had not received any signals on negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. In addition, he also expressed skepticism about the role of the Europeans in these negotiations, saying that their participation in terms of achieving an acceptable result "does not bode well."
On the same day, Peskov said that Russia wants to establish lasting peace in Ukraine. He noted that Russia's position on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis is clear and consistent. The Kremlin's official representative also said that the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Trump, had a telephone conversation relatively recently.
