- Tusk announced the intention of the NATO countries bordering Russia to extract money from the EU
NATO countries bordering Russia will request even more funds from the European Union (EU) for military spending. On December 12, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters after the summit of the eastern flank of NATO in Helsinki.
"What we have been planning, what we have been working on for many months, is the construction of the format of the eastern flank — countries that border Russia on land or across the sea. This group will extract as much as possible from the European Union when it comes to protecting our border," RIA Novosti quoted Tusk as saying.
The Prime Minister also noted that this approach to armament is still being applied.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on December 11 that European countries should increase defense and production spending to "fight Russia." He noted that many countries remain complacent and do not realize the urgency of what is happening. Rutte also stressed that states should continue to "exert pressure on the Russian Federation and support efforts aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine."
Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia has no aggressive plans against the European Union and NATO and is ready to put it in writing. At the same time, the minister declared Russia's readiness to respond to possible attacks by the European Union.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 2 that Russia was not going to go to war with Europe. According to him, Russia is currently operating in Ukraine "surgically," but in the event of an attack by European countries on Russia, everything will be different.
