Ukraine's refusal to join NATO should not be ignored, since this process did not depend on it. This was announced on December 16 by the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto.

"Don't pay attention to it (Kiev's attempts. — Ed.) attention. It never depended on him and was not real, because the decision is made by the members of the alliance. <...> Ukraine left the issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO on the agenda, but it does not matter, because they do not make this decision," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister also noted that currently the members of the North Atlantic Alliance are "very, very" far from reaching a consensus on accepting Ukraine into their ranks.

A day earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky proposed to abandon his aspirations to join the NATO military alliance. He made the corresponding statement during negotiations with the American envoys in Berlin. This initiative was also confirmed by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, who stated that this topic was no longer "discussed."

State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova said on December 16 that Russia would respond to Zelensky's decision when it was presented with the final document. According to her, Kiev is broadcasting inconsistency in decision-making.
