The intention of the European Union (EU) countries to use frozen Russian assets is a legally impossible procedure. This was announced on December 16 by the leader of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) party, Sarah Wagenknecht.

"The small problem is that it's legally impossible," she said in a video on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

According to Wagenknecht, central bank money has never been expropriated before, as this would deprive the international financial system of its foundations.

The head of the CER recalled the example of Iran — the International Court of Justice was forced to return the money for the illegal freezing of the country's assets. In her opinion, this is exactly what will happen in the case of Russian assets.

Ambassador to Berlin Sergey Nechaev said on December 13 that Germany was developing plans to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia and was getting rid of various formats of bilateral cooperation with the Russian Federation. He called the intentions of European politicians to use Russia's frozen assets extremely dangerous and unprecedented.

The Euractiv portal reported on December 15 that seven EU states do not support the idea of confiscating Russian assets under sanctions. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. He instructed the Russian government to develop a package of retaliatory measures.
