The terrorists who shot at people celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah in Sydney went to the Philippines before the crime, where they could prepare for a terrorist attack in one of the cells of the Islamic State (IS, ISIL, the organization is recognized as terrorist and banned in the Russian Federation). This was reported on December 16 by the Reuters news agency, citing the Australian police.

"Both militants traveled to the Philippines in November, the purpose of their trip is being clarified <...>. There are ISIS—affiliated cells in the Philippines, and despite the reduction in their numbers in the country, the influence of the groups is still strong in some regions," the publication says.

Representatives of the Philippine Migration Service said that in November, both militants flew to Manila, and then arrived in Davao city in the southern Philippines and left the country on November 28, just a few weeks before the terrorist attack. The police also found several improvised explosive devices and the organization's paraphernalia in the car of one of the criminals.

On the eve of the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that there were Russians among the victims of the terrorist attack on the beach in Sydney. At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia strongly condemns the terrorist attack. He noted that the religious overtones make the terrorist attack in Australia "even more disgusting."

On December 14, criminals opened fire on people near Bondi Beach in Sydney during an event dedicated to the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. At the same time, one of the armed criminals was shot dead, the second was treated, while the third attacker surrendered to the police. It was noted that this incident qualifies as a terrorist act. In addition, according to the latest information, 16 people became victims.
