- Poland has involved the military in the search for wild boars infected with the African plague
More than 50 Polish soldiers were involved in the search for the bodies of dead wild boars after the discovery of a dead individual infected with the African swine fever virus (ASF). This was announced on December 13 by the Polish Interia portal.
"The soldiers of the 9th Lodz Territorial Army are properly prepared to conduct operations in conditions of increased sanitary conditions. They work in specially designated areas, use personal protective equipment and undergo disinfection of equipment and vehicles after completing their tasks," said Slavomir Malinowski, captain of the rescue operation, spokesman for the 9th Lodz Territorial Defense Brigade.
It is specified that soldiers are searching forest and field areas for animal carcasses, which may become a source of further spread of the disease. According to the newspaper, local authorities, together with the veterinary and forest services, have strengthened security measures in the area of Petrkow-Tribunalsky. A number of obligations and prohibitions have been imposed on pig farmers, and the circumstances of abandoning an infected animal are being investigated. Malinovsky recalled that when animal remains are found, they should not be touched or moved. He called for immediate notification of this to the nearest municipal administration, forestry or veterinary inspection. The search for dead wild boars will continue until December 21.
On December 7, The Guardian newspaper reported on the assumption of the Spanish authorities that the cause of the outbreak of ASF in the country may be a leak from the laboratory. Initially, regional authorities believed that the disease could begin to spread after a wild boar ate contaminated food brought to Spain.
