In the UK, an 86-year-old pensioner was fined for environmental pollution — he spat out a piece of paper that flew into his mouth. This was reported on December 10 by the British tabloid Daily Mail.

"When I was sitting there, a strong wind blew a large reed into my mouth. I spat it out, and as soon as I got up to leave, two guys came up to me," said the fined Roy Marsh.

According to the newspaper, one of the policemen told Mr. Marsh that he saw him spitting on the ground. He was fined 250 pounds (about 27 thousand rubles), but after an appeal the amount was reduced to 150 pounds (about 16 thousand rubles). Marsh noted that he considers the punishment disproportionate to his act and is afraid to go outside after the incident.

On September 24, protesters in the UK said that the partial cancellation of compensation for needy pensioners to pay for heating in winter was a shameful and unfair decision. The demonstration took place in Liverpool, where the annual conference of the ruling Labour Party, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is taking place. It was reported that the cancellation of compensations in force since 1997 in the amount of £100 to £300 (about 12.3–37 thousand rubles) is one of the topics discussed, and the trade unions opposed it. Last year, 11 million people received payments.
