The United States and the European Union (EU) countries have agreed to provide security guarantees for Ukraine similar to Article 5 of NATO. This was announced by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference on December 15.

"This is really a far—reaching, meaningful agreement. <...> President [of Ukraine Vladimir] Zelensky at the same time referred to article 5 of the NATO treaty, that is, we are talking about similar security guarantees for Ukraine," Merz said, his speech was broadcast on the website of the German government.
