VTB assessed the effectiveness of anti-fraud measures
Prompt detection of suspicious transactions and informing customers play a key role in the fight against fraud. This opinion was expressed by VTB Bank experts.
According to VTB, the most common fraudulent schemes against pensioners were social engineering methods and the installation of malicious software. They were most often reported by VTB pension clients who received compensation under the preferential insurance program for pensioners.
Scammers make phone calls or contact via messengers, under various pretexts convincing customers to transfer money to a "secure" account or transfer it to "reliable" people for safekeeping. Another popular fraudulent scheme against pensioners is the requirement to install software disguised as popular applications: government and medical services, utility payment applications, and banking services.
"Today, the key role is played not only by the prompt detection of suspicious transactions, but also by preventive work — informing customers and reminding them of the risks when identifying atypical transactions," the bank noted.
From January to November 2025, VTB compensated the bank's pension clients for about 200 million rubles in free insurance, which protects their VTB accounts and cards from major types of fraud. The program is valid from 2021 and applies to clients who receive a pension from the bank. During this time, the bank reimbursed about 600 million rubles to the affected customers. The insurance covers cases related to access to phishing sites, transfers of funds under the influence of fraud, theft of card data, installation of malware, as well as theft of cash withdrawn from an ATM.
