More than 30 Russian war correspondents have died since the outbreak of hostilities in 2014. This was announced on December 15 by Vladimir Solovyov, Chairman of the Union of Journalists of Russia.

"We have already lost a total of more than 30 people [since 2014], and this year — seven people, if you count the drivers of the film crews," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

On December 15, Russia celebrates the day of remembrance of journalists who died in the performance of their professional duties. The memorial date was established in 1991 by the decision of the SSR.

Solovyov pointed out the great importance of this day for the entire journalistic community.

"People, the audience, our fellow citizens see how heroically our military personnel work, how they die in the line of duty," Solovyov said.

Izvestia correspondent Alexander Martemyanov died on January 4 from shrapnel wounds when a drone of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) hit a car on the Donetsk–Horlivka highway. He died from his injuries. The correspondent was buried in Donetsk on January 8.

The head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, noted that Martemyanov's materials about Donbass "were bold and objective." In addition, the military commander provided assistance to the residents of the republic. On January 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded Martemyanov the Order of Courage.
