The suspect in the shooting at Brown University, 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson, previously served in the US Army and received awards. CNN reported this on December 15 after reviewing the man's profile on the LinkedIn social network (blocked in the Russian Federation).
"According to his biography, Erickson, a 24-year-old native of Wisconsin, served as an infantryman in the US Army, where he completed sniper training, had experience in firearms training and served as a shooter from 2021 to 2024," the publication says.
It is noted that Erickson was awarded a medal for impeccable service and helped ensure security near the American president. He also participated in funeral arrangements at Arlington National Cemetery in the United States. The suspect planned to continue his studies at Brown University in the current fall semester.
"A representative of the US Army stated that Erickson did not participate in combat operations and retired last year with the rank of specialist," the TV channel reports.
The shooting at Brown University became known on December 13. According to CNN, at least two students were killed and nine others were injured in the attack.
The next day, the police detained a man who may be linked to the attack. The identity of the suspect and the circumstances of his detention have not been clarified.
Due to the incident, the school decided to cancel most of the exams of the last semester of 2025.
