Reuters reported on Zelensky's proposal to abandon Ukraine's accession to NATO.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky proposed to abandon the country's aspirations to join the NATO military alliance during talks with American envoys in Berlin. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on December 15.
"They lasted for more than five hours and today ended with an agreement to resume tomorrow morning," the agency quoted Zelensky's adviser Dmitry Litvinov as saying.
It is noted that the negotiations took place with the participation of the envoy of the American leader Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, and the son-in-law of former president Jared Kushner, and 20-point projects on peace, economy and security were discussed. Before the meeting, Zelensky proposed abandoning Ukraine's ambitions for NATO in exchange for Western security guarantees.
According to the President, all agreements must be legally binding. European leaders will continue consultations on Monday to clarify the details of possible guarantees.
As the Italian newspaper L'antidiplomatico noted a day earlier, Zelensky himself is disrupting the peace process with his statements about a possible referendum on territorial issues. It is pointed out that such a move has nothing to do with democracy and only blocks the peace process.
On December 11, the Public television channel reported that Zelensky had allowed the holding of an "all-Ukrainian referendum" on the issue of territories. According to the TV channel, Zelensky said that the citizens of Ukraine should express their opinion on the issue of Ukraine leaving the controlled part of Donbass.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, responding to a question about Zelensky's proposed idea to hold a referendum to determine the affiliation of Donbass, said that all of Donbass is Russian. He recalled that the affiliation of Donbass is spelled out in the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
