Australia called the terrorist attack in Sydney a targeted attack on Jews
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on December 14 that the terrorist attack on the beach in Sydney was a targeted attack on the Jewish community on the first day of the Hanukkah holiday.
"This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, a day that should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith. This is a heinous act of anti-Semitism and terrorism that has struck the very heart of our nation. An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian," he said.
Responding to a question about measures in connection with the attack, the Prime Minister confirmed that the government continues to work on all the recommendations of the Special Envoy on Anti-Semitism. He noted that a request had previously been made for additional funding for security measures.
Albanese stressed that a very difficult time is coming for the Jewish community, and it is important that "she is not left alone with this, and all Australians support their fellow citizens of a different faith in this dark hour for the nation."
On the same day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Izvestia that the shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on the beach in Sydney was a terrible tragedy and Russia was following the news from Australia. She added that the Russian Embassy in Canberra and the Consulate General in Sydney are investigating information about the presence of Russian citizens among the victims.
